NEW ABSTRACT PAINTING BY ALEJANDRO GOYA

I just started a new series of work titled  ManaAina which means the power of the earth in Hawaiian. This abstract painting, I come to realized after it was finished, speaks about my experience of living in Haiku, Maui, where it rains while the sun is out, all is green and the weather is just like this triptych: blue & cloudy skies, flowers, fruit trees and earthy tones. I feel fortunate to be inspired & creating on this unique and beautiful land. Thanks for being here. Alejandro Goya.

TWO NEW ABSTRACT SCULPTURES BY RANDALL REID

Paia Contemporary Gallery uncrated these two new abstract sculptures by Randall Reid last week. I am exited to share with you the images of Dry Fields and Madera Verde which are made of steal, wood and paint. These mixed media works came straight from the artist’s personal art collection and were made on 2005 and 2009, with materials dated from who knows when. I am a big fan of Randall Reid’s old abstract sculptures and I get very exited when I bring over to our Maui gallery these rare finds. It is difficult to say where the artist exactly finds his weathered building blocks, but as far as I know they mainly come from dismantling old machines, tools, furniture, fences, signs, etc. Basically, Randall Reid’s abstract sculptures are all about death and rebirth. Taking apart aged and obsolete objects, the artist gives them a new life and meaning in a new world, and with a completely new identity. In their past life their function served a practical and short term purpose; now viewed as art building elements, these worthless materials become spiritual, immortal and for some, priceless.

About The Artist
Abstract sculptor Randall Reid is Professor of Art and Design at Texas State University San Marcos since 1988. His modern artwork has been featured in over 300 shows and exhibitions both internationally and at national galleries. Randall Reid is represented in numerous private and public collections including The American Embassy, The Arkansas Art Center, The Austin Museum of Art, The Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, The Masur Museum and The Muscarelle Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist Statement

“The abstract glass sculptures I make are an exploration of external and internal form; an expression of the relationship that exists between shape and light. I strive to create objects that push the material itself beyond its simple inherent beauty. When I look at a finished piece, it should be apparent to me that it could only exist in glass.” -John Kiley

LATEST NEWS: abstract art by JYLIAN GUSTLIN at Paia Contemporary Gallery

abstract-art

Paia Contemporary Gallery is very pleased to announce the latest addition to its core group of abstract artists, painter Jylian Gustlin. We have been following her abstract art over the past five years and Jylian Gustlin’s mixed media paintings are a perfect fit to our Paia gallery. We believe that her talent and original artistic vision are greatly contributing to our commitment and efforts of continuously striving to create the most unique of Hawaii’s art galleries. Here is sneak preview to one of her panels. To view Jylian Gustlin’s available art on Maui, visit our Maui gallery [11 to 7 pm], or browse our her page on our website here.

ABOUT THE ARTIST – Jylian Gustlin is a native Californian and grew up in the San Francisco bay area. She has been shaped by the technology explosion of Silicon Valley and her abstract artwork reflects her in-depth knowledge of that technology. I knew that if I finished, I would never make art” is how Jylian Gustlin explains leaving college one semester short of a degree in computer science and mathematics to attend the Academy of Art College, San Francisco. After completing her BFA, Jylian Gustlin fused her understanding of computers and her passion for art to become a graphics programmer for Apple Computer, Inc. Now, Jylian uniquely combines the effects of modern technology with traditional painting techniques. While working with acrylic and oil paints, her artwork often conveys the same complex layered effects possible in computer programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Just as she challenged the creative limitations of the latest computer software, Gustlin experiments with a variety of materials to discover their effects. Working with two-part epoxy resin, oil and acrylic paints, charcoal, wax, gold leaf, pastel and graphite on board, Gustlin draws, paints, scratches on her surfaces.

Maui News’ Art In View – July 2012

Maui News Art In View writes:

“Maui has its fair share of galleries specializing in art that showcases the beauty of our island paradise. Realistic depictions of splashing humpback whales, sunsets, tropical flowers and other island scenes are abundant and well represented. Abstract art is not nearly as well represented.

One gallery that specializes in abstract contemporary art is Paia Contemporary Gallery at 83 Hana Highway. Created by a core group of Hawaii artists, alongside national, and international established talents, will present a new show with an artist reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

The featured artists are Jessica Drenk, abstract sculptor from South Carolina; Joseph Segal, abstract sculptor from Florida; and Al Schwartz, a Maui abstract artist who has turned to contemporary painting after a long history in ceramics.

For the last 15 years, Schwartz has collected certain minerals from the clays on the island. He has now found a way to incorporate those same minerals into his paintings, giving an earthly sheen to these modern color fields.

Drenk works with everyday items, objects of modern society, and turns them into something iconic. Pencils, toilet paper, books, ear buds, PVC pipe these are some of the elements Drenk masterfully transforms, to gracefully enter the realm of fine art.

“By transforming familiar objects into nature-inspired forms and patterns, I examine how we classify the world around us,” says Drenk. “Manufactured goods appear as natural objects, something functional becomes something decorative, a simple material is made complex, and the commonplace becomes unique.”

Segal’s honors include the Historic Preservation Award from the City of Jacksonville, multiple Artistic Enhancement Grants from the State of Florida and multiple Fostering Vitality in the Arts Grants from the Jacksonville Community Foundation. His work has been featured in over 150 solo and group exhibitions in public buildings and national galleries since 1993.

“I impose a geometric composition on natural materials to examine our relationship with the environment,” says Segal. “A need for order is balanced with a desire for deeper understanding of the essence of the elements that I work with. I use processes and finishes that either obscure or illuminate the nature of these materials to reiterate the divergence within these concepts.”

The show runs through Aug. 22.”
