About The Artist

Alejandro Goya, a prominent abstract artist and proprietor of Paia Contemporary Gallery, is central to Hawaii’s vibrant abstract art scene. In May 2014, the physical gallery space in Paia Town closed to seamlessly transition to a virtual platform, where he continues showcasing his abstract artwork alongside several other talented abstract artists.

Since 1998, Goya’s abstract paintings have graced numerous group and solo exhibitions across the United States. Notable highlights include recurring Artist in Residence roles at the prestigious Four Seasons Resort at Wailea and participation in multiple Juried Exhibitions at the renowned Schaefer International Gallery. His work has also been featured in esteemed galleries such as HiArt Gallery in New York, numerous exhibitions at Paia Contemporary Gallery, and various other esteemed galleries throughout Hawaii.

Artist Statement

Living and painting alongside the ocean is a perpetual source of inspiration, reminding me of the harmonious yet unintentional collaboration between humanity and nature in creating art. Rusting metal, peeling paint, and the nuanced colors adorning random surfaces gradually transform under the influence of weather while the radiant tropical sunlight bestows a permanent glow upon them all.

My fascination with color interaction theories fuels my artistic exploration, but I also find equal significance in harmonizing my practice’s analytical and creative aspects. Balancing the left and right brain in composition, medium, and color is central to my artistic process.

While color often takes center stage in my abstract paintings, I remain attentive to other crucial elements. In my minimalist pieces, textures are absent, and lines are rendered with precise uniformity, whereas my more spontaneous works embrace medium to thick-textured mixed media.

The construction process is guided by a delicate equilibrium of knowledge, experience, and spontaneity throughout the creative journey. Experimentation is both the most vexing and rewarding aspect of my practice. Through trial and error within expansive color fields, I am continuously surprised by the unforeseen outcomes. Rules are defied, and risks are embraced in pursuit of fostering novelty and individual expression.
