Artist Statement
Many of my pieces involve the viewer as a participant in experiencing the work. Passively or actively, a person can make the piece as intriguing as they choose. Either by moving themselves, or as in some outdoor installations, letting the environment move and change the work. Visual illusion, or what I call “mental” illusion, often comes into play to offer another layer of participation. Challenging or questioning the norm, then offering an alternative. Encouraging the viewer to “think out of the box”. Literally taking a visual departure from what is regular consideration, or offering up a concept that may inspire, or even require, a different way of thinking. Much of my work also allows a quiet, contemplative interaction. Giving a visual focal point for individual meditation and thought. The work offers something to soothe your mind or engage it. Questioning. Wondering. Leaving it up to the individual to decide their own level of participation.
