Abstract Ceramic Sculptures

About The Artist
Stephen Freedman’s abstract ceramic sculptures have been widely commissioned and exhibited both at international and national galleries. His  abstract sculptures have been featured in over 100 exhibitions since 1983 and now reside in many public, private and museum collections including the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, West Australian Museum of Art, The Getty Museum, Westin Hotels and Art Institute of Boston to name just a few. Stephen Freedman is also a published author and the chief editor of HI ART Magazine – Hawaii’s contemporary art publication.

Artist Statement
” Many engaging concepts during my career were seeded by my early childhood in South Africa. My mother’s interest in pottery began in Africa offering me medium; while my father, a biologist, worked with now mythological figures in the field of human evolutionary study. His pursuit of these evolutionary principles imprinted the way I subsequently perceive the world.

As an abstract sculptor and ceramist, the emergent vessel in transit is my medium. Utilizing the transitional states of matter within this small cosmos, I construct, deconstruct, assemble and disassemble disparate elements into singular entities. Memory of process becomes product, as intention and improvisation are consigned to fire. Within the kiln the associated elements are melded into narrative of a unique odyssey. Shrouded in tempered glass–insect in amber– the final object endures as a synthesized metaphoric mnemonic of a journey of life through time.”   – S. Freedman
